MISSION:
Our mission is to improve the health of citizens living in rural areas, while also showing them some of Wisconsin’s beautiful forests and rivers by providing them with the opportunity to hike and canoe through the Nicolet Forest and participating in an informational health program.
Many studies have found that rural areas have substantially higher obesity rates than urban areas. For example a new study published in the Journal of Rural Health found that 40% of adults living in rural areas are obese compared with 33% of adults living in urban areas. They have determined there are two main reasons for this difference. First, their diets are based on an abundance of rich foods prepared at home. Second, those living in rural areas have less access to facilities like gyms and health care because they are physically isolated.
In order to diminish this gap, my nonprofit organization will strive to teach people from rural areas about healthier food options and make them more active by leading them on hikes and canoe rides throughout the Nicolet Forest, located in northern Wisconsin. We encourage you to bring a family member along, maybe a grandchild or spouse! Our trails are designed for anyone and everyone! If you choose to come alone, don't worry, our guides will keep you entertained the whole way with their vast knowledge of everything having to do with the nature surrounding you!
